How to Set Up a 65-Gallon Aquarium: Step-by-Step for First-Timers

Setting up a 65-gallon aquarium might sound intimidating — but with the right system, it’s surprisingly simple. At Caldera Haven, we recommend the JBJ 65-Gallon Rimless AIO Aquarium for its streamlined, all-in-one design.

This guide walks you through the setup process, from placement to cycling to stocking — all with clarity and calm.

What You’ll Need:

  • The JBJ 65-Gallon Rimless AIO Aquarium (with stand)
  • Heater (if tropical)
  • Substrate (gravel or sand)
  • Hardscape (rocks, wood, plants)
  • Water conditioner + test kits
  • Optional: live plants, décor, background, fish food

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

Pick a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight and high foot traffic. Your aquarium will weigh over 600 lbs when filled — ensure your floor can handle the load.

Step 2: Install the Stand & Tank

Place the included white cabinet, level it, and carefully position the aquarium. Ensure there's space behind for cords and maintenance access.

Step 3: Add Substrate & Hardscape

Rinse your substrate thoroughly and add 2–3 inches to the tank base. Then place your décor, rocks, driftwood, or plant bases. Pro tip: slope the substrate slightly from back to front for visual depth.

Step 4: Fill With Water (Slowly)

Use a plate or bowl on the substrate and pour water over it to avoid stirring up dust. Use dechlorinated water — or treat it with a conditioner like Seachem Prime.

Step 5: Power Up Your Filtration

The JBJ AIO system has built-in filtration chambers at the back. Insert filter media (sponge, carbon, bio-media), then plug in the pump and heater. Set your temperature (usually 76–78°F for tropical fish).

Step 6: Cycle the Aquarium

This is a crucial step — cycling your tank establishes beneficial bacteria that convert waste into non-toxic forms.

  • Add bottled bacteria or use fishless cycling with ammonia
  • Test water every few days for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
  • The cycle usually takes 2–4 weeks

Step 7: Begin Stocking Slowly

Once ammonia and nitrite are zero and nitrates are present, you’re ready for fish! Start with a few hardy species, then gradually add more over several weeks.

Bonus Tips for a Successful Start

  • Keep lights off during cycling to avoid algae
  • Use timers for consistent lighting schedules
  • Perform 10–25% weekly water changes once stocked
  • Observe fish behavior daily — they’re your best indicator

Your Tank. Your Canvas.

A 65-gallon aquarium offers endless creative possibilities — whether you’re going minimalist, lush planted, or full reef.

The JBJ Rimless 65-Gallon simplifies setup, elevates your space, and helps you enjoy the journey with less stress.
