Setting Up Your 65-Gallon Rimless Aquarium: The Elegant Beginner’s Guide

So you’ve chosen the JBJ 65-Gallon Rimless Aquarium. Excellent choice. Now let’s set it up — calmly, cleanly, and with confidence.

Whether you're new to aquariums or just stepping up in scale, this guide will help you create a serene aquatic environment that complements your home and nourishes your fish.

Step 1: Choose the Perfect Placement

  • Weight support: Use a level surface with floor support for over 600 lbs
  • Ambient lighting: Avoid direct sunlight to reduce algae
  • Foot traffic: Keep it in a peaceful spot with low vibration

The included stand is designed to match modern interiors while supporting your tank securely. Position it first before you unbox the glass components.

Step 2: Set Up the JBJ All-In-One Filtration

The built-in AIO (All-In-One) system makes setup easier:

  • Install the included return pump
  • Add mechanical sponge, biological media, and optional chemical filtration
  • Make sure your outflow is positioned for even circulation

The filtration is whisper-quiet — ideal for living rooms, offices, or bedrooms.

Step 3: Aquascaping & Substrate

This is where form meets function. We recommend:

  • Substrate: 1–2 inches of black sand or natural gravel
  • Rocks & wood: Keep it minimal and sculptural
  • Plants: Java fern, anubias, vallisneria — low-maintenance and calming

Take your time with the layout — this is your underwater artwork.

Step 4: Fill & Cycle

  1. Use dechlorinated water or RO/DI (for advanced setups)
  2. Install a heater if keeping tropical species
  3. Cycle the tank for 4–6 weeks with beneficial bacteria or ammonia source

This step is critical. Let your tank stabilize before adding fish.

Step 5: Add Life Slowly

Once water parameters are steady (ammonia = 0, nitrites = 0, nitrates < 30ppm), begin stocking gradually. Try:

  • 6–10 schooling tetras
  • 2–3 centerpiece fish (like dwarf gouramis)
  • Bottom dwellers (like corydoras or otocinclus)

Each fish adds personality. Add with intention — not impulse.

Bonus Tips for a Serene Setup

  • Use an automatic timer for lighting
  • Perform 15–20% water changes weekly
  • Use a magnetic glass cleaner for easy maintenance

You’re Building More Than a Tank

You’re creating a living focal point — a source of rhythm, relaxation, and presence in your space.
