Why Fish Owners Keep Coming Back: Aquarium Habits & Hobbyist Loyalty (2025)
Published by Caldera Haven • July 2025
Commitment to the hobby
According to a recent APPA survey, 74% of fish owners said they are “very likely” to continue owning fish over the next 12 months. Aquariums aren't just décor—they're long-term passions. When a pet fish dies, 84% of owners replace it, suggesting that aquarists treat their tanks as ongoing ecosystems rather than one-time setups.
High turnover means more purchases
85% of saltwater fish owners and 72% of freshwater fish owners purchased at least one new fish in the past year. Looking forward, 77% of saltwater aquarists and 55% of freshwater hobbyists plan to add more. Saltwater tanks, in particular, see frequent restocking due to species fragility or natural life cycles.
The emotional connection is real
52% of fish owners have purchased a gift for their fish (like décor upgrades), and nearly half have included fish in their will or estate planning. That’s a 29% rise since 2018—proof that aquatic pets hold a meaningful place in modern households.
Where fish are bought (and it’s not just online)
65% of owners discover new fish at local pet stores or aquarium shops. 37% buy from independent aquatic retailers—a 32% increase since 2018. Despite the growth of e-commerce, the majority still rely on physical stores to purchase fish and supplies.
In-store purchases still dominate
63% of freshwater and 51% of saltwater fish owners buy fish food in-store. Even tank gear and supplements are often picked up locally. Online shopping might be convenient, but when it comes to live animals and water chemistry, hobbyists still value hands-on expertise and quick access.
Wellness is now a priority
33% of owners buy medications, 46% provide vitamins, and 66% use water conditioners regularly. These numbers have increased 27–43% since 2018, signaling a shift toward preventive care and health-focused aquarium maintenance.
Specialty stores are winning
More owners are purchasing health products at dedicated outlets. 31% now buy fish meds from pet stores (up 24%); 38% buy supplements (up 52%); and 37% buy conditioners there (up 32%). These rises show that hobbyists seek knowledgeable support and quality brands when it comes to tank health.
Breeding and community support
Over 66% of hobbyists have bred fish at some point, and many participate in clubs or online forums. The social nature of the hobby—from breeding guppies to raising rare coral species—adds to the stickiness of fishkeeping. It’s more than a pastime—it’s a lifestyle.
